Destiny 2 The Whisper mission guide: How to find secret chests, Blighted Essence, and an Exotic ship blueprint

How to milk everything you can out The Whisper mission

Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

After earning Whisper of the Worm, your time in The Whisper won’t be even close to over. Now you’ll have to run through again to get the catalyst, and twice after that to get the chest and receive that precious Blighted Essence to upgrade your Whisper of the Worm. If you’re stuck on the Sleeper Simulant IO-JYS2 catalyst step, that’s here as well.

This guide will teach you how to do all of that. If you need some help getting through the normal one, we’ve got you covered as well.

Note: Wait to do a chest run until after you have the Whisper of the Worm catalyst, or else you’ll have to do it again for the Blighted Essence. You also won’t be able to do the chests and complete the mission in the same run, so plan for two.

Chest 1

The first chest is really easy to find. Once you destroy the Taken Blight in the Lost Sector, drop down the hole and keep going forward until you reach the first red jump. After the first red jump, but before the crawl, look for a small crack in the wall. Jump into it to find the chest. Open it, and you’ll receive some Blighted Essence. (If you’ve crouched through the hole and into the pinball bumpers room, you’ve gone too far.)

Chest 2

Keep going until you hear Xol speak to you, in the room with all the portals. Instead of going in, jump to the back wall where you’ll find a ledge, under where the Knight spawns. Walk down the wall to the left, through a door filled with light. Follow the path, and you’ll find the chest.

Chest 3

Once you’re down the portal and in the big, white room with the awesome music, take a left into the first crack you find. Follow the path and crawl through the hole to get to the third chest.

Chest 4

This is the hardest chest in here, and it requires some serious platforming. You’re looking for green grass, which will tell you where you can and can’t stand.

In the white room, look over to the pile of rubble on the left. Climb it and look for a ledge on the wall. Jump to the ledge, look up, and jump to the next one. Look to the left for the next ledge. Now look behind you and jump to another ledge.

Walk the path until you reach the end, turn left and look up. Jump up to the ledge. Look up and to your right, and jump to the ledge. Look up again and jump to a ledge. Follow the wall until you jump over to the back wall. Keep looking and climbing up until you jump between the big crack in the wall. Keep moving forward, jumping around a pillar and landing on the corner brick.

Look to your right and start moving on the right wall. There are some narrow ledges here, but the path is easy to follow. When you reach a dead end, jump up and keep going. Eventually you’ll come to the brick on the back right corner of the room. From here, jump to the final brick, which should be above where you dropped into this room. Look left into the crevice, and jump down to the grass pad here. Crouch and grab the fourth chest.

Chest 5

When you reach the cylinder, before the leap of faith, turn right and jump along the platforms there. Follow the right wall until you jump onto a giant Vex portal. Here, you’ll see the Vault of Glass raid through the portal. Walk through the illusion and jump over to a small pole in the darkness. Jump right into a lit crevice and then over again to the right. Open the final chest.

The blueprint and Sleeper

Bungie/Activision

Once you’ve nabbed all five chests, return to the Vex portal. Stand on the center plate, and some oracles will appear in a specific order in front of you. This actually corresponds to the spawn order in the original Vault of Glass. Once the oracles stop blinking and become stationary, you’ll need to shoot them in an order.

The oracles are numbered 1-7, left to right.

  • Wave one: 1, 3, 5
  • Wave two: 4, 6, 7, 3, 1
  • Wave three: 7, 3, 1, 6, 4, 2, 5

After you’ve shot third wave of oracles, a chest will spawn. In it, you’ll find the IO-JYS2 Sleeper Simulant catalyst completion if you’re on that step, and the Enigmatic Blueprint for an Exotic ship. You’ll have to complete the heroic version again for more Blighted Essence and complete it on each singe week to complete the ship.
