Head to Io for some exotics

Destiny 2 Xur
Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

If you played Destiny, you may be familiar with Xur, the weekly Exotic item merchant. In Destiny 2, he’s back, and he now appears all over the map. This week, he’s on Io. You can find Xur hanging out north of the Giant’s Scar, hanging out in a cave.

Xur’s inventory this week consists of the following:

  • Graviton Lance, exotic pulse rifle: 29 Legendary Shards
  • Orpheus Rig, Hunter legs: 23 Legendary Shards
  • Synthoceps, Titan gauntlets: 23 Legendary Shards
  • Aeon Soul, Warlock gauntlets: 23 Legendary Shards
  • Isochronal Engram: 97 Legendary Shards

Xur’s inventory caps out at 631 if you’re at 650 power. He also offers specific rolls on each armor piece each week, giving out different perks for the same pieces. We’ve highlighted any great rolls below.

Graviton Lance

Graviton Lance’s exotic perk is Black Hole, which causes the gun to only fire two bullets: one with low damage and the other with high damage. The second perk, Cosmology, causes kills with Graviton Lance to make the enemy explode and spawn void missiles that seek targets. This can cause a chain reaction of explosions, which can be extremely powerful in certain situations.

Graviton Lance is an excellent exotic and feels unique in the landscape of Destiny 2’s arsenal. It’s excellent in PvP as well, and can shred through enemies very quickly if they aren’t paying attention. Graviton Lance’s problems stem from the same kinds of issues a lot of exotics have, in that there are certain weapons that are just more powerful. Why run Graviton when you can have Thunderlord or Whisper of the Worm?

Because it’s fun and good, that’s why. If you’re missing Graviton Lance, pick it up from Xur this week.

Orpheus Rig

Orpheus Rig is also one of the best exotics in the game. Its main perk, Uncanny Arrows, generates additional Super energy for each enemy tethered with Shadowshot and grants more shots to Moebius Quiver. This means a well-placed Hunter Super can regenerate a big part your Super. This is extremely helpful in a few different endgame scenarios, including Nightfalls and Raids. These did get significantly nerfed in Forsaken, but are still very potent. If you like Nightstalker, you have to get these legs.

This week’s roll:

Slot 1: Fusion rifle dexterity, hand cannon dexterity, outreach (melee cooldown is is reduced when you use dodge)

Slot 2: Scout rifle scavenger, special ammo finder

This roll isn’t great. Hand cannon dexterity is good if you love using hand cannons, but handling isn’t that big of a deal in most scenarios. Special ammo finder is fine, but it’s a common perk. This roll is mediocre but the exotic is amazing. If these’ll be your first Orpheus Rigs, buy them.

Synthoceps

Destiny 2 patch 1.2.1 brought changes to Exotic armor. As we wrote near the patch’s release, “The Synthoceps will now buff melee damage and super damage by a flat amount for a full eight seconds after being surrounded by three or more enemies. This is potentially a very powerful Exotic now.”

Its Biotic Enhancements intrinsic perk offers “increased melee lunge range” as well as “improved melee and Super damage when surrounded.” This is one of the most powerful Titan exotics in the game and always benefits you for wearing them. If you don’t have these, buy them!

This week’s roll:

Slot 1: Fusion rifle loader, hand cannon loader, impact induction (melee hits reduce grenade cooldown)

Slot 2: Sniper rifle scavenger, machine gun scavenger

This is a great roll of a great exotic. Hand cannon loader is an awesome perk for hand cannon players and impact induction is a good catch-all. Machine gun scavenger is another great perk in the current meta, with machine guns being very popular. If you’re a Titan player, you should really pick this roll up.

Aeon Soul

Part of the Aeon exotic line added in Curse of Osiris, the Aeon Flux gauntlets are for Warlocks. Their exotic perk is Aeon Energy, which gives class energy — grenade energy for Warlocks — to nearby allies wearing other Aeon armor pieces each time you throw grenades. Non-Aeon users will also receive some energy. This is a terrible exotic and you can easily get it by completing the Curse of Osiris campaign on your Warlock. Don’t buy these.

This week’s roll:

Slot 1: Fusion rifle loader, hand cannon loader, impact induction (melee hits reduce grenade cooldown)

Slot 2: Sniper rifle scavenger, machine gun scavenger

This is one of the worst exotics in the game, regardless of the roll. Like with Synthoceps, it’s a nice roll. But there is no reason to own this version of Aeon Soul over another, so save your Legendary Shards.
