How to increase you chances at the Exotic and solve the in-dungeon puzzle for its Catalyst

Duality is the new dungeon that Bungie released with Destiny 2’s Season of the Haunted. This dungeon is the first in the franchise to have an Exotic drop tied to the final boss, similar to the Exotics that are tied to most raids. Defeating the final boss grants you a chance to obtain the new Exotic sword Heartshadow, and you can increase that chance by completing a variety of in-game challenges.

In this Destiny 2 guide, we’ll go over how to get the Heartshadow sword and its corresponding Catalyst.

Heartshadow

Heartshadow is an Exotic sword that deals Void damage and uses heavy ammo. It has the following two Exotic Perks:

  • Exhumation - Heavy attacks made while you have full sword energy turn you invisible and fire exploding Void projectiles.
  • Shot in the Dark - Remaining invisible grants this weapon temporarily increased damage. Hitting a target with this weapon’s projectiles while Shot in the Dark is active Weakens them.

How to get Heartshadow

Heartshadow is a random drop after defeating the Nightmare of Caiatl, Princess Imperial (the dungeon’s final boss). You can increase your drop chances by completing the following triumphs:

  • Master Thoughtstealer - Complete the Duality dungeon on Master difficulty
  • Mind Heist - Collect all 12 Repressed Memories
  • Solo Thoughtstealer - Complete all encounters in the Duality dungeon solo
  • Perfected Thoughtstealer - Complete all encounters in the Duality dungeon solo without dying

How to get the Catalyst

After you get lucky and acquire the Heartshadow, three Nightmares will spawn in three specific places in the dungeon on subsequent runs. When you kill them, they’ll drop a Standard. You’ll then need to take those Standards to their specified nearby plate.

These Nightmares all spawn in the Nightmare realm, and after you kill them you must exit the Nightmare realm before the timer hits zero. Once you’ve done this three times and placed the third Standard, a chest will spawn behind it and you’ll receive the catalyst.

Note: These Nightmares will only appear if someone in your Fireteam has Heartshadow but not the Catalyst.

The Catalyst for Heartshadow grants the Wraithwalk perk, which makes you move faster when invisible while the sword is equipped.

Standard 1

The first Nightmare, the Nightmare of Ka’nok, spawns on the second Repressed Memory. At the top of the climb to the second bell, there is a small offshoot on the right side (looking at the second bell).

Once you enter the Nightmare realm, the Nightmare will spawn in that room.

Take the Standard to the bell you take to exit the Nightmare realm — after exiting the rafters of the first room. The plate that you place it on is directly behind that bell.

Standard 2

The second Nightmare, the Nightmare of Regor, spawns in the jumping puzzle that follows the first encounter. After you hit the first switch, the Nightmare will spawn on the platform opposite of where you enter the room.

Once you kill them, you’ll need to take the Standard into the statue puzzle — this means you must take it down the slide, so be extra careful if you’re carrying the Standard (we recommend jumping as you go).

This plate is located in the Nightmare realm in the same location as the secret chest in the normal realm.

Standard 3

The third and final Nightmare, the Nightmare of Hou’dal, spawns in the last Nightmare realm before the final boss. You’ll know you’re in the correct place when you’re jumping between thin rafters.

Before exiting, look to your right and you’ll see a large doorway. This room is where the Nightmare will spawn.

Once you have the Standard, you’ll need to take it out of the Nightmare realm and over to the rafters where some Cabal spawn.

Place the Standard on the plate and a chest will spawn that will give you the Catalyst.
