Lego Dimensions shows off Portal-inspired level at E3

Charlie Hall is Polygon’s tabletop editor. In 10-plus years as a journalist & photographer, he has covered simulation, strategy, and spacefaring games, as well as public policy.

The team behind Lego Dimensions was on hand during the YouTube Live at E3 stream to show off Portal-inspired gameplay for host Geoff Keighley.

TT Games, veterans of past Lego series titles, explained for fans how the toys-to-life game used the game's peripheral pad for more than just holding toys. The pad actually functions as an input device, being used to move Lego minifigs between colored portals and to change the scale of objects in the game world.

Chell made her first live gameplay appearance, facing off against GLaDOS in the now classic Aperture Laboratories setting.

"For all intents and purposes," said a representative from TT Games, "it should feel like another Portal game. You’re just playing it with Legos."
