The Last Guardian will finally launch this October

Nine years after development began

The Last Guardian comes to PlayStation 4 on Oct. 25. Sony revealed the long-awaited release date during tonight's E3 press conference, alongside the latest trailer.

This is one of the more in-depth looks we've had at the game, which has been in development since 2007. Players will assume the role of a young boy — similar to Team Ico's previous projects — who uses the help of Trico, a dog-meets-bird-meets-cat-meets-dragon creature, to avoid enemies. The new footage shows more of the puzzle-solving and animal-petting last seen in a trailer from 2015 — including a second of the Trico creatures.

Team Ico first revealed the game, the studio's third, at Sony's 2009 event. Back then, The Last Guardian was meant for PlayStation 3. The developer stayed quiet on the project until it was reintroduced last year on-stage at Sony's presser. A new trailer was revealed, including the first look at gameplay.
