Quake World Championships happens this August

Quake Champions will add Wolfenstein hero B.J. Blazkowicz to its growing roster of heroic characters. The team at id Software also announced a $1 million Quake World Championship tournament on August 26 at QuakeCon in Dallas, Texas.

Quake Champions is a free-to-play incarnation of the classic arena shooter and includes new maps as well as new interpretations of classics like the Ruins of Sarnath. Players get access to a single hero character named Ranger and can unlock additional heroes for short periods of time with in-game currency. Alternately, players can pay for a bundle that includes unlimited access to additional heroes. Champions include the highly mobile Nyx, the AI-controlled robot Clutch and the tank-like Scalebearer. Each features unique abilities that cater to different playstyles.

The game featured prominently during Bethesda’s pre-E3 press conference with a lengthy video touting the game as the original esport. You can watch the trailer above.

Quake Champions is in currently in an open beta on Windows PC.
