During Ubisoft’s E3 2017 press conference, the publisher unveiled a new pirate-themed multiplayer game called Skull and Bones.
A pre-rendered announcement video (embedded above) showed two ships meeting on the ocean and lobbing cannonballs at each other. One of the ships is sunk, but the remaining is then flanked by two more large enemy ships.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot introduced the new game as “building off the legacy of one of our most popular games,” seemingly referring to Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag.”
Later, Ubisoft Singapore creative director Justin Farren took the stage. He revealed that Ubi Singapore was the developer behind Black Flag’s naval combat. Since then, the studio has focused on breaking those mechanics out into their own game.
Skull and Bones will be a multiplayer-focused experience, with players competing to become the most notorious pirate. Farren introduced a video showing off loot hunt, a five-versus-five mode where the team with the most loot at the end wins. Each player gets their own ship, rather than all working together on a single ship.
Sailing will take into account wind usage, how sails are set and other real-world factors. The demo also showed off a return of one of Black Flag’s beloved features: sea shanties that crew members will sing as you sail.
You can see full multiplayer demo in the video below. Skull and Bones will be released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC fall 2018. Ubisoft will run beta tests for the game at some point before that.
