What is going on with the sky in Super Mario Odyssey?

Super Mario Odyssey is a game that takes Mario to places he’s never been before, but a new moment on stream has us asking a very important question: is Mario trapped?

The exact moment in question can be seen in the photos below. There are a series of gridded lines that appear, which makes us believe that Mario is actually in some kind of dome. Even the people on stage playing through the game and talking about it brought up that it was a weird sky, noting to ask the designers what it could all allude to?

Super Mario Odyssey is a sandbox game that is full of different kingdoms for Mario to explore. As seen in another level, Mario can climb up beanstalks and other objects to get to a different setting and explore. This could mean that the dome world Mario can be seen walking through in the level above is just one of many worlds — but we can’t say for certain.

Based on what we’ve seen so far, Super Mario Odyssey is one of the oddest titles yet. The game steals heavily from Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, but based on what we’ve seen today, it already looks much larger.
