Octopath Traveler brings Square Enix’s JRPG tradition to Nintendo Switch this July

Fan feedback from the 2017 beta informed the changes made in the last six months

Octopath Traveler, the latest role-playing game from Square Enix, was given a 30-second tease during Square Enix’s E3 2018 livestream this afternoon. The game is coming to Nintendo Switch on July 13.

The story of Octopath Traveler follows eight characters who occupy traditional role-playing game types — warrior, apothecary, cleric and thief, for example. Square Enix has billed Octopath Traveler as a “2D-HD” game. It was originally announced in September 2017, with a demo version applauded by fans of Square’s traditional Japanese RPGs, but criticized by others for slow combat and the feeling it was too derivative of other games in the publisher’s catalog.

Responding to fan feedback from that demo — nearly 50,000 participated — Square Enix gave Octopath Traveler faster movement speed and changes to the look and texture of the game world, to get players into the game’s action and story more quickly.
