Destiny 2 Year One gear will be useful in Forsaken, Bungie says

At E3 2018, Bungie confirmed that players will be able to bring their current legendaries into the Destiny 2: Forsaken, the game’s new expansion this September. While we know that the grind will still be worthwhile this summer, Cotton didn’t explain how legendaries will carry over in his interview with PC Gamer.

“You’ll be able to bring your Year One stuff forward with you,” Destiny 2 game director Steve Cotton told PC Gamer. “If you own Forsaken you’ll be able to bring it up to the same [level].”

This statement may seem a bit ambiguous to the discerning Destiny fan. One of the new features being worked on with Forsaken is the return of perks on Legendary armor and a new system for weapon progression. It’s currently unclear if we can expect these features to be added into old gear or not.

Project lead Scott Taylor added a bit more context to the new system toward the end of the same PC Gamer interview:

We are very comfortable saying that if you’re working on faction rallies right now, or the things that are coming in the summer, that’ll still be totally worth it because you’ll be able to bring that stuff into the new content. But we have a lot more details to talk about there, but we can definitely assure people that’ll be the case.

For players who are still working to collect all of the legendary gear released with Warmind, this will no doubt come as a relief. It also means that the PvP-exclusive Redrix’s Claymore will be worth grinding for.

While all of this is good news, there is still a possibility that players’ Year One legendaries will be markedly worse than those they receive in Year Two. So while you can technically use them, you may have to make a significant sacrifice to do so.

All of the fine details depend on the new investment system for armor and weapons — something the team at Bungie is still actively working on.

Destiny 2: Forsaken will be released on PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One on Sept. 4.
