Cyberpunk 2077 first details from CD Projekt Red

First, it’s a first-person RPG

Days after releasing an extended trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 at Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference, developer CD Projekt Red has started talking about what kind of game it’s making. Cyberpunk 2077, in the studio’s own words, is “an open world, narrative-driven role-playing game” played in the first-person perspective.

Players will assume the role of V, a “hired gun on the rise” in Cyberpunk’s violent metropolis, Night City. CD Projekt Red promises a “robust character creator” that will let players choose their gender, appearance, class and background — choices that may influence how Cyberpunk 2077 plays out.

Players will interact with the residents of Night City through a dialogue system that gives them agency over Cyberpunk 2077’s narrative. The story will be replete with choices and consequences, CD Projekt Red said, “difficult decisions that will ripple through the entire game.”

One aspect of Cyberpunk 2077’s design that’s causing concern among some players — those who played The Witcher games, which are played in third-person — is the new game’s first-person perspective. On Twitter, CD Projekt Red, tried to calm fears that it’s making a first-person shooter and that, therefore, character customization will be pointless.

“You’ll have many opportunities to see your character,” the developer said. “It’s going to be First Person RPG, not a FPS.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is confirmed for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. The game does not have a release date yet. Check out a batch of new screenshots in the gallery below. We’ll have more on Cyberpunk 2077 from E3 2018 later this week.
