The underdog of the 16-bit console wars, NEC’s TurboGrafx-16, is getting a retro re-release thanks to Konami. The company announced the TurboGrafx-16 Mini, a smaller scale version of the console released stateside in 1989, at E3 2019 on Tuesday.
The TurboGrafx-16 Mini will recreate the cult classic console in a compact fashion similar to the NES Classic, PlayStation Classic, and Sega Genesis Mini. It will come pre-loaded with classic games and include a recreation of the original TurboGrafx-16 gamepad. No need for a multi-tap though; the TurboGrafx-16 Mini comes with two controller ports.
Konami confirmed five games so far, and promises more are coming soon. Here’s what we know will be included for sure:
- R-Type
- New Adventure Island
- Ninja Spirit
- Ys Book I & II
- Dungeon Explorer
- Alien Crush
Naturally, we should expect TurboGrafx-16 classics like Blazing Lasers, Bonk’s Adventure, and The Legendary Axe to be announced in the future, so watch this space. Konami didn’t announce pricing or release date for the TG-16 Mini.
The TurboGrafx-16 was based on the PC Engine, which launched in Japan in 1987. The console was much more successful overseas than it was in the States, where it battled the popular Sega Genesis and Super NES. Konami plans to release a PC Engine Mini in Japan, with a slightly different game lineup that currently includes Super Star Soldier, China Warrior, Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, and Bonk’s Adventure; and a PC Engine Core Grafx Mini in Europe.
