The Murkwater Catacombs are a hidden dungeon in Elden Ring’s West Limgrave area. In this area you will find the Grave Warden Duelist boss. In this Elden Ring Murkwater Catacombs guide we’ll tell you how to find the dungeon, what enemies to expect, and how to beat the Grave Warden Duelist.
Murkwater Catacombs location and enemies
The Murkwater Catacombs are located north of the Murkwater Cave. Bloody Finger Hunter Yura is close outside. If you are not already in the gorge approaching from the south, there is a Spiritspring close to the entrance, which will break your fall so that you can get down.
The Murkwater Catacombs are full of Imps. These enemies are well-camouflaged and often hidden around corners, so be wary when going through doorways. They can also spring from the ceiling, as in the first room where approaching to pick the Grave Glovewort will trigger a surprise attack.
You can trigger the lock-on (click the right analog stick on controllers) to get a warning about Imps ahead. Imps are agile and best fought one-on-one where possible, although those further away from the fight may also use projectile weapons, so keep moving.
Progressing further through the dungeon, pay attention to the large, square pressure plates in several of the corridors. These will trigger three waves of fire projectiles. On the other hand, if you roll to avoid them, they can be useful for killing groups of Imps.
Straight ahead down the corridor is five Root Resin and a lever necessary to open the boss door. The boss door itself is down the corridor to the right.
Murkwater Catacombs boss: How to defeat the Grave Warden Duelist
The boss of the Murkwater Catacombs is the Grave Warden Duelist, a humanoid who fights with two chained hammers. He has significant range and can also grab you if you get too close.
Summons can help with this boss, particularly in staggering him. Unfortunately, though, if you don’t kill the Imps on the run back from the site of grace, they will stand close to the boss door and summons can aggro on them instead, making them essentially useless.
There is an easily obtainable weapon which is effective in this boss fight. The Lordsworn’s Greatsword is in the northernmost wagon chest at the Gatefront Ruins. These are also in West Limgrave, close to the entrance to Stormveil.
The Lordsworn’s Greatsword requires 16 Strength but comes with the weapon skill Stamp (Upward Cut). This will knock the Grave Warden Duelist down, giving you an opening to attack. From there, it is also easier to stagger him, leading to yet more opportunities for damage.
Once defeated, the Grave Warden Duelist will drop the Battle Hammer. This is a strike damage weapon that requires 26 Strength to wield.
