Billie Eilish released a Studio Ghibli-esque music video for her song, ‘my future’

Billie is back with her second animated music video

Pop superstar Billie Eilish is already known for experimental music videos. The latest, for her new single “my future,” is no exception.

In the new video, Eilish swaps out the dark and dour atmosphere of most of her videos to jump into an animated world. The video opens with an animated Eilish sitting in a forest during a rain storm and staring at the moon. The rain collects on pools and on leaves and the environment looks distinctly inspired by Studio Ghibli movies like Princess Mononoke.

As the song continues, she wanders through the forest, clearing away the dark clouds and the rain with her presence and causing new life to spring up from the ground. The newly formed roots and vines wrap themselves around Eilish, lifting her up into the sky and out to of the newly green and beautiful forest. The whole video plays like a cross between My Neighbor Totoro and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. It’s beautiful and hopeful, but not without a little bit of the melancholy and profound sadness that makes Ghibli and director Hayao Miyazaki’s movies great.

While this is Eilish’s second animated music video, it is the first to take on a lighter and more wholesome tone. Her last animated video was for the song “you should see me in a crown,” where she teamed up with Takeshi Murakami to create a video with an apocalyptic vibe that ends with animated Billie turning into a giant monster ... a far cry from the “my future” vision of Studio-Ghibli style spring.
