Dame Daphne du Maurier’s novel Rebecca has been adapted numerous times since its publication in 1938, most notably as a Best Picture-winning film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940.
Now, Ben Wheatley (Kill List, High-Rise) is taking a crack at the story, casting Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’s Lily James as a young woman whose life suddenly changes when she meets the charming Maximilian “Maxim” de Winter (Armie Hammer). When she accepts his proposal, she’s whisked off to his estate, Manderley, where she discovers that their picture-perfect romance might be a little more complicated than she thought. Maxim’s late wife Rebecca haunts the place like a ghost, and Maxim seems to be keeping secrets.
Kristin Scott Thomas co-stars as Mrs. Danvers, Manderley’s housekeeper, with Keeley Hawes, Sam Riley, and Ann Dowd rounding out the rest of the cast.
The film — and Hammer’s ridiculous accent in it — is set to hit Netflix on Oct. 21.
Netflix has also released a new poster for the film, which you can see below:
