Far Cry 5: Our favorite place to hunt and make money fast

Making lots of money at the Harris Residence

Ubisoft Montreal/Ubisoft

We’ve found a Far Cry 5 hunting location — the Harris residence — where you can make about $10,000 every 20 minutes or less (based on your skills and spawn luck). And it includes hares, the most valuable animal in Far Cry 5.

You’ll need to prepare a little to get the most out of this location, though. This hunting guide will point you to our favorite hunting spot as well as the perks to buy and the fangs and guns for hire that will ensure that you make the most money on every hunt.

This is where you want to go. The Harris residence is on the west edge of Holland Valley — (which is John Seed’s region). It might be hard to find depending on how much exploring you’ve, done, so here are a few landmarks: it’s west of the Reservoir Construction Yard, north of Dodd’s Dumps, north-northeast of US Auto and northeast of the security gate on the way up to John’s bunker. There’s even a fast travel point you can access once you get there the first time.

Hunting perks

Ubisoft Montreal/Ubisoft

There are two perks you’ll want to maximize the money you’ll make here:

  • Harvest master (survivalist, eight points). This skill doubles the loot you pick up from plants and animals. Where you’d normally only get one skin, you’ll get two.
  • Journey pack (prepper, seven points). This perk gets you a bigger backpack. You’ll be able to carry more gear like medkits, but, more importantly for this guide, you’ll be able to carry more skins, feathers and bait as well. This means more hunting before you have to head to a vendor.

A couple other perks will help you out, but these are optional:

  • King of the jungle (survivalist, six points). First, this reduces the damage you take from animals. That’s important because you’re going to be attacked by wolverines a lot while hunting here. It also makes prey species less likely to flee from you.
  • Sneaky sprint (assassin, four points). This perk makes you move faster while crouched which keeps you mobile while staying out of sight.

Specialists and weapons

Boomer gets a 13/10.

Aside from your perks, you can make hunting easier by bringing along the goodest boy and our favorite fang for hire, Boomer. He’ll automatically mark animals on your HUD — white chevrons are prey and red chevrons are dangerous. He’ll also occasionally retrieve small animals you kill so you don’t have to go looking for them in the brush.

If you have to pick one, pick Boomer. If you can bring two, Jess Black, master huntress, is a great addition . Her feral friendly perk means that animals won’t run away from her. When Boomer finds an animal, put it in your sights and order Jess to sneak up and kill it.

The loot you get from an animal depends on how you kill it. If you shoot a deer with a gun, you’ll get one skin (without the harvest master perk). If you kill the same deer with a bow instead, you’ll get two. Bring a bow hunting and use it whenever you can. It’s not always practical, though, so bring along something stronger to back it up (we’re not saying you should bring an M60 hunting, but we’re not not saying that either). Just make sure you use your bow as much as possible, especially on the more valuable animals.

Animals around the Harris residence

The Harris residence is our favorite hunting spot because there’re just constantly animals everywhere around it. And there seems to be a higher-than-usual occurrence of alpha (tougher and more valuable) versions of those animals. Alphas are easy to spot due to their grey color. Here are the animals you can expect to see in the vicinity.

Hares — $300 per skin

This is what drew us to the Harris residence in the first place. Facing the house, turn slightly left and look at the garage (it’s more of a carport, really). If you’re really, really lucky, a hare might spawn right there in the driveway. If not, there’s a fence in the underbrush on your left (to the south). Follow it along until it ends where there’s a gulley that leads downhill. A hare often spawns right at the top. If there’s not one there either, check along the fence behind the house and in the back yard. If you’re still not having any luck, start running around for a while and bag some other game.

Check these two spots again any time you wander back toward the house. Always use your bow on hares — with the perk, you’ll get four skins for every one you kill, and that’s $1,200. Alpha hare skins are worth $350 each.

Wolverines — $170 per skin

The Harris residence is right near a wolverine hunting spot. There are just so many wolverines around here. So many. Alpha wolverine skins are worth $400 each.

American black bears — $185 per skin

If you head off either to the southwest or the northeast of the house, you’re almost guaranteed to find a black bear. Alpha black bear skins are worth $300 each.

Deer — $180 per skin

They do move in herds!

There are a lot of deer in the woods to the south of the house and in the field to the northeast. Alpha deer skins are worth $300 each.

Elk — $190 per skin

Head a little way up the hill to the northeast of the house, then watch for an open field on your right. There are always a least a couple elk around there. (Usually, they’re being chased by a wolverine or a bear).
