The beginning of Final Fantasy 14 Online involves running everywhere on foot. While you can fast travel through the Aetheryte you find, you still need to visit them in person first. The quickest way to get around without teleporting is to get a mount.

In this FFXIV guide, we’ll explain how to unlock your chocobo mount. We’ll show you the quests that lead up to it, as well as the requirements to get one.

When can you get the chocobo mount?

You will get the opportunity to receive a chocobo mount at Lv. 20.

As you progress through the main story, you’ll be asked to join one of the game’s three Grand Companies: The Immortal Flames from Ul’dah, The Maelstrom from Limsa Lominsa, or The Order of the Twin Adder in Gridiania.

Once you figure out which Grand Company to choose, you’ll get a company-specific version of the a quest called “The Company You Keep.”

Completing the quest puts you in the ranks of a Grand Company. From there, you’ll have to complete several quests for them to unlock Grand Company-specific currency, with which you can unlock your mount.

How to get the chocobo mount

After you become a part of a Grand Company, accept the quest called “My Little Chocobo.” The reward for this small mission is an item that will let you summon your own chocobo.

This quest requires you to give an item called a Chocobo Issuance to a character in your Grand Company. You can buy this item from your Grand Company’s Quartermaster for 200 Company Seals.

To get Company Seals, you can:

  • Complete FATEs out in the open world
  • Fill out entries in the Grand Company Hunting Log
  • Accept and complete Grand Company Leves
  • Undertake supply and provisioning missions

Once you buy the Chocobo Issuance, give the item to the character in your Grand Company. Afterwards, you’ll receive the Chocobo Whistle, which you can use to summon your chocobo.

As you progress through different areas of the game and complete quests, your chocobo will run faster through those areas. Once you finish A Realm Reborn, you’ll unlock the ability to fly with your chocobo.

At Lv. 30, you’ll receive the quest called “My Feisty Little Chocobo.” Complete that, and your chocobo can fight alongside you, level up, and learn new skills.
