Fortnite’s Getaway mode is a totally new way to play the game

The Getaway mode is a big departure for Fortnite

Fortnite has always been more of a platform for different ideas than a strict battle royale game, and Epic Games hasn’t been shy about trying new things out. Today’s addition of the Getaway limited-time mode to kick off the High Stakes event, however, may be one of the most radical departures from the standard game since the Thanos event.

You can watch the trailer for the new mode at the top of this post to see why.

“Four safes have been loaded into supply drops scattered around the island, each carrying a large jewel,” the Fortnite team explains on the official site. “You and your crew must locate a safe, pick up the prize inside and getaway with the goods while battling enemies. The first four teams to make their way to a van with a jewel and getaway win!”

It’s a squads mode, so you’re probably going to increase your chances to win by playing with people you know. It’s interesting that four teams can win each round; that’s a big shift from the last-person-standing rules of the standard game and the versus mentality of 50v50 modes. This is going to be both a race and a battle.

This is also the launch of the High Stakes event, which brings with it a fresh set of challenges that will unlock new cosmetic items for your character. That’s in addition to the Wildcard outfit that can be purchased for 2,000 V-bucks and comes with a choice between four masks, each with a different card suit on it.

Here are the challenges you’ll need to complete to unlock all the event’s rewards, along with what you’ll get for doing so:

  • Play 10 matches of the Getaway — Get 5,000 XP
  • Do 500 damage to Jewel carrying opponents — Unlock the Suited Up Spray
  • Pick up a Jewel in five different matches of the Getaway — Unlock the Cash Flow Contrail
  • Complete all three challenges — Unlock the Crowbar Pickaxe

The event and game mode are both live now, so you can get to work on the challenges and trying out the new mode after updating. You can read about all the changes that have come to the game today, and we’ll have hands-on thoughts about the new mode after playing a few rounds. This is a big day for Fortnite players.
