Fortnite’s new Avengers crossover mode, Endgame, is all about Infinity Stones and the war with Thanos. But no matter which side you’re on, the ending screen will have a nice little shoutout to the memory of Marvel Comics mastermind Stan Lee.
Excelsior is a Latin word that means “ever upward.” Throughout his life, Lee often used the word as a sort of catchphrase and personal motto. As he was the creator of some of Marvel’s most iconic heroes, the phrase seeped into the comics themselves and has come to be associated with Lee.
In Fortnite, the phrase appears on the end-of-game screen no matter what happens in the match. If you’re playing the heroes or villain, win or lose, the bottom of your screen will still give you a nice big “Excelsior!” for your efforts.
This is Fortnite’s second crossover event with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Endgame mode is the main attraction for the event, featuring new character types and weapons like Captain America’s shield and Thor’s Stormbreaker ax. There are also new Marvel cosmetics in the shop.
Avengers: Endgame premieres in theaters on Friday, April 26.
