Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to add Persona 5’s Joker as DLC

A new trailer at the Game Awards showed off the fighting styles of a new fighter

Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

At the Game Awards 2018, Nintendo revealed what’s next for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Joker from Persona 5 will join the roster sometime next year as the game’s 76th fighter, a new trailer revealed. The protagonist of one of last year’s best RPGs will be among the first fighters to be available as DLC.

Joker is the name of the Phantom Thief lead of Persona 5. Players can choose his civilian name, but he and the rest of his teen crew switch to using these codenames — and their very good costumes — when they enter various realms to help solve some serious existential mysteries and crimes. Persona 5 is only playable on PlayStation consoles, making this the character and game’s first appearance on Switch.

Joker will be available to purchase individually, but he’ll also come as part of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighter Pass. This will include five different bundles, each including a fighter, stage and music. The entire pass will run players $24.99.

Players should likely expect the first DLC pack for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to come out early next year, after the release of Piranha Plant — a fighter who’ll be gifted to the game’s early adopters, although we’ll have the option to buy him if we miss that initial window.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be released tomorrow, Dec. 7, for Nintendo Switch.
