The next set of cards for Magic: The Gathering is called Theros: Beyond Death, Wizards of the Coast revealed tonight during The Game Awards. The venue brings attention to the company’s new digital product, Magic: The Gathering Arena. Originally codenamed “Baseball” by designers, Theros cards will start appearing in Arena on Jan. 16. Physical cards will show up in stores during the set’s pre-release weekend, starting Jan. 17.

The new trailer, which we’ve embedded above, is quite a departure from the playfulness of Magic’s previous set. Throne of Eldraine took its cues from Grimm’s fairy tales and Arthurian legend. Theros is appears to be far darker, and includes a fairly graphic drowning. The cards themselves will be themed to suit.

“Face your fears as nightmares become reality,” Wizards said in a press release that accompanied tonight’s announcement. “The trailer transports fans to the afterlife of Theros and showcases fan-favorite knight, Elspeth Tirel, as she seeks to escape from the underworld. But nightmares from her past, as well as the Gods themselves, stand in the way of her quest.”

The 250-plus card set will feature the series traditionally lavish art treatment, and include plenty of alternative cards for collectors. There will also be a bevy of new and returning mechanics. Expect more information on Theros to flow out on the official Wizards blog.
