It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about the Gears of War strategy game Gears Tactics, but that’s changing. Microsoft showed up to The Game Awards in Los Angeles on Dec. 12 to debut a new trailer for the game — and a release date: April 28, 2020.
The turn-based strategy game was revealed during Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference; Fergusson showed a brief clip of early gameplay at that time, noting that Gears Tactics is a prequel take takes place 12 years before the original Gears of War. Tactics was originally announced as a Windows PC exclusive, but Fergusson said on Twitter this year that it will, after all, come to Xbox One.
After the trailer aired, Fergusson said on Twitter that Gears Tactics is a single player game with no microtransactions — “not even cosmetic ones.”
For those asking, #GearsTactics is single player and has no micro transactions. Not even cosmetic ones. Everything is earned in game.

Gears Tactics is being developed by British studio Splash Damage, which was involved in the development of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Gears of War 4, and Gears 5.
Gears Tactics is the third of three games in the franchise that Microsoft and The Coalition announced in 2018, following Gears 5 and Gears Pop! Gears Tactics is coming to Steam, Windows 10 and Xbox Game Pass for PC.
