The connectivity is apparently required to support the game's focus on how players' local communities can have a global impact on other players' cities. Still, that feature likely won't make the decision any more popular against decriers of always-on DRM.

In slightly brighter news, the game will be available for purchase outside of EA's Origin platform, but must be played on said platform in order to enable the connection mentioned above. It looks like the biggest disaster to be visited upon your simulated burg won't be flooding, fire or Godzilla, but rather, a poorly-timed internet outage.
