The Product Red campaign, which raises money to treat and prevent HIV, AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria announced today that they plan to host a global PS3 and Xbox 360 video game tournament.
Not much is known about the (RED)RUSH video game tournament, which according to the site runs from June 1 to June 10.
"Gamers will have the chance to compete against the most loved brands and celebrities as well as each other while playing video games like EA's Madden 12, FIFA 12, 2K's NBA2K12, KINECT Sports 2 and more," according to the a post that went live on the official (Red) site this afternoon. "And with donate to play, proceeds from the (RED)RUSH Games will help support HIV/AIDS Global Fund grants on the ground in Africa."
We've reached out to (RED) as well as the Entertainment Software Association, which shows the company as a exhibitor at E3, for more details.
According to the short blog post, it sounds like the event is tied to fundraising for (RED).
"To add to the competition we've created two teams - TEAM INSPI(RED) and TEAM POWE(RED) Which team do you think will raise the most money?," the post asks. "We already have Kate Upton, Funny or Die, Samantha Ronson and Wayne Brady on board - will you game on to fight AIDS too? "
The Product Red campaign was launched by Bono and Bobby Shriver in 2006 to help raise awareness and funds for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Product Red licenses its brand to companies like Nike, Apple and Starbucks and then donates some of those proceeds to the fund.
It appears that Product Red is teaming up with a group called "Sticks Gaming" for this video game tournament.
