Competitive gaming is coming to mobile phones with the launch of the Xperia Mobile Gaming Arena.

The new platform is available for iOS and Android devices and is a result of a partnership between the world's largest competitive gaming league, Major League Gaming (MLG), Sony Mobile Communications, and Gameloft.

The service is launching with Gameloft's first-person shooter, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation. Players who log into the the area and compete can win more than $10,000 in prizes. The game arena ranks players based on scores and new competitions kick off regularly. The current competition is for the player who achieves the most kills in Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation. The player ranked first will win $1000, second will take home $500, and the third-ranked player will receive $150.

"The MLG community thrives on competition and with our new mobile platform, we are now enabling gamers to engage in competitive play no matter where they are," said Sundance DiGiovanni, CEO of the MLG.

"Bringing together MLG's authority in competitive gaming, Gameloft's blockbuster game titles and Sony Mobile's immersive mobile entertainment experience, the Xperia(TM) Mobile Gaming Arena is sure to deliver a new level of mobile gaming for competitors."

To participate, players need to link their MLG and Gameloft accounts. Their ranking will automatically be updated on the Mobile Gaming Arena leader board.
