Skylanders toys sell 30 million, surpassing Star Wars action figure line.
Publisher Activision announced better-than-expected financial results for the first quarter of 2012 today, highlighting sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and World of Warcraft subscriptions. The company also boasted impressive sales of its Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure games and the frequently scarce Skylanders toys.
Activision announced today that in addition to Skylanders coming in as the "#1 kids video game" for the first quarter, it has sold more than 30 million toys as of March 31, 2012. According to Activision execs, that dwarfs Hasbro's Star Wars action figure line.
"Based on our internal estimates, we believe that [Skylanders] toys sales in the first quarter exceeded those of Star Wars, the #1 action figure line," said Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, preceding that with "For the [first] quarter in North America and Europe, including the accessory packs and figures, Skylanders Spyro's Adventures was the #3 best-selling game overall in dollars across all platforms."
Activision plans to revisit the Spyro spin-off with Skylanders Giants this fall for multiple platforms. The publisher released Skylanders Cloud Patrol for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch in April.
