Skylanders is already 2012's bestselling game title, thanks to massive toy sales.
The combined forces of Spyro, Stealth Elf, Gill Grunt, Chop Chop and the rest of the Skylanders crew have made Activision monstrously richer. As of April 30th, Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure is the "#1 best-selling console and handheld video game title" worldwide, Activision said today, based on revenue that includes sales of the associated toys and accessories.
Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure is available for Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Mac OS X, and Nintendo 3DS, with versions for web browsers and iOS. Dozens of toys and accessories, like the "Portal of Power," add a physical component to the game, letting players import characters into the game world.
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said in early May that Skylanders toy sales in the first quarter of 2012 "exceeded those of Star Wars, the #1 action figure line."
Activision is basing its impressive sales figures of Skylanders and its dozens of toys on data from The NPD Group, GfK, Charttrack and Activision internal estimates.
The game is due for a sequel this October with the release of Skylanders Giants. The follow-up will introduce 20 additional Skylanders toys, some of them giant-sized beasts that add a new gameplay mechanic to the franchise.
