Avatar FameStar, a new Xbox Live program that will offer cross-game Avatar awards for completing challenges, is set to launch with the July 25th release of Wreckateer for Xbox Live Arcade, Microsoft announced today.
The program, which will initially be available for "a select group of games," encourages users to spend more time playing Xbox Live Arcade games and compete with their friends. It will offer weekly and one-off challenges, with Avatar items like "exclusive new outfits" as prizes. Finishing challenges earns "Fame," a measure of in-game accomplishments that is separate from Gamerscore.
In addition to Wreckateer, past XBLA games including Full House Poker and A World of Keflings are being updated to support FameStar. Content unlocked through FameStar will be available to use in other games that are compatible with the service: for example, players will be able to wear a FameStar-exclusive Full House Poker Avatar outfit in Wreckateer. Support is slated to be added to Avatar Motocross Madness, Fire Pro Wrestling, and Homerun Stars.
At this time, it is unclear if Avatar FameStar will affect the current Xbox Live Avatar awards system, or Achievements and Gamerscore. We've reached out to Microsoft for comment and will update this story if we hear back.
