NBA 2K13 is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the famed USA Basketball "Dream Team" by bringing it into the game, along with the 2012 USA Basketball Men's National Team, 2K Sports announced today.
Players will be able to pit the teams, separated by a generation of basketball history but perhaps equal in talent, against each other to see who would come out on top in a showdown for the ages.
"The fantasy matchup between the legendary 1992 'Dream Team' and the 2012 USA Men's national team has become one of the greatest sports debates of our time," said NBA 2K13 executive producer Jay-Z. Fans now have the opportunity to act out that theoretical debate, and NBA 2K13 cover athlete Kevin Durant — a gold medalist himself as part of the 2012 team — counts himself among them: "Like everybody, I can't wait to see how our squad stacks up against the 1992 team in NBA 2K13."
The original Dream Team, renowned as the greatest collection of athletes ever assembled, handily defeated all its opponents — winning by an average of just under 44 points — en route to a gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. NBA 2K13 features the team as seen above, including Charles Barkley, who was conspicuously absent from the "NBA's Greatest" mode in NBA 2K12. Other NBA legends on the Dream Team include NBA 2K11 cover athlete Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, David Robinson, and Larry Bird. Scottie Pippen is the only Dream Team member missing from NBA 2K13; he previously appeared on a few classic Chicago Bulls teams in NBA 2K11 and 2K12.
