In Darksiders 2's latest trailer, a 30-second TV spot done entirely in CG, Death doesn't actually kill anyone.

It appears that with this commercial, THQ is trying to evoke the famously affecting CG debut trailer for Dead Island, which grabbed viewers by showing a family in peril. Here, Death saves the lives of a father and his daughter who are fleeing the apocalypse — but he does it inadvertently, just happening to knock a creature out of harm's way while charging into Hell.

It's less effective, perhaps because it only has 30 seconds — not three minutes — to draw gamers in. Still, it conveys an important element of Darksiders 2's tone: Death is indifferent, so stay out of his way.

Darksiders 2 is slated for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on August 14th. Check out Polygon's previous pieces on the game's combat and relationship to its predecessor.
