Batman shooter Gotham City Impostors' move to Steam and free-to-play today wasn't without its casualties: Effective immediately the Games for Windows Live version of the game is no longer officially supported.

That includes the PC version purchased on EA Origin, GameStop Impulse and of course through Games for Windows Live's own storefront.

Those forced to shift to Steam will be rewarded with special content that only they will ever have access to, Nate Edson, senior producer on Gotham City Impostors, tells Polygon.

The shift is in part spurred by the fact that the game is a rework of the original title, Edson said.

This new Steam version includes all of the downloadable content previously released for the game, all of the fixes and patches combined into a single title. It also adds new gadgets, weapons, game levels and more things to unlock through free level progression, he said. The game will also feature some new things, like daily challenges.

After reworking the content, the team went back and did some rebalancing too, Edson added.

News of the switch to free-to-play hit the game's official website this morning along with a FAQ for confused PC players.

"Gotham City Impostors on Games for Windows LIVE will no longer be officially supported," according to the FAQ. "So, while you can still play it, we won't be actively watching over it. But, you can use your Games for Windows LIVE CD key to get a special set of rewards, available only to those that played Impostors on the PC in what will soon be known as the "good 'ol days"! "

Those rewards will come in a DLC package that's worth about $20, Edson said, and includes a bunch of weapons and unique content for those original game purchasers. Edson said that all DLC purchases will also transfer over from Games for Windows versions of the title. When an item can't be transferred, because it no longer exists, players will get a like item, he said.

While the switch comes with some rewards for people who purchased the title on PC, it doesn't allow those long-time Gotham City Impostors PC gamers to transfer their gameplay stats.

The switch to free-to-play for PC has no impact on people who own the game on PS3 or Xbox 360, according to the site.
