Minion Master, the upcoming "digital board game" from developer Bit Flip Games, entered its multiplayer-ready beta today, according to the developer.
"The launch of the Minion Master beta is a massive step for BitFlip — the introduction of multiplayer opens a whole new world of tactics and challenges against human opponents. Along with a new animation system, we've given the digital board game a massive overhaul," said executive producer David Steinwedel. "We look forward to listening to community feedback over the coming weeks, that will continue to shape Minion Master as we move closer to commercial release".
Minion Master, which began as an actual board game before the developers digitized it, allows players to amass card-based armies and battle on customizable hex-based maps. With a mechanic the developer calls "round based play," each player chooses moves simultaneously. Players discover their opponents' moves at the end of each round as the characters on the board charge into battle.
Bit Flip Games is taking discounted preorders, which unlocks access to the beta. The developers expect Minion Master to release in late 2012, and they'll have it on display at PAX Prime later this month, where Polygon will also be in attendance. In the meantime, you can check out the video below showing some early hexagonal gameplay.
