Amazon may be the world's largest online retailer, but the Nintendo Wii U, the first next-generation console, isn't available for pre-order there.

We chatted with an Amazon customer service representative about the Wii U. When we asked if Amazon has an idea of when the console will go on sale there, the rep told us, "I am sorry that I do not have any information about when/if it will be available."

That doesn't sound promising, especially since Amazon doesn't sell the most recent Nintendo hardware: it stopped carrying the 3DS in 2011, and never carried the 3DS XL, which launched in North America last month. (Both handhelds can be purchased on the site through third-party sellers, but not directly from Amazon.) The retailer does have over 30 Wii U games available for pre-order, along with accessories like the Pro Controller.

We've reached out to both Nintendo and Amazon for comment, and will update this article with any information we receive.

Update: As a point of clarification, the console is available for pre-order on Amazon UK, just not on the US Amazon site.
