Cave Story, the indie-darling platformer from game designer Pixel, will be available on the 3DS eShop on October 4th for $9.99, developer Nicalis announced today.

It is a separate game from Cave Story 3D, a polygonal 3D remake of the game that launched on the 3DS in November 2011.

The eShop version of Cave Story preserves the original 2D sprite artwork, but adds 3D depth to the side-scrolling platformer. It is playable in the original 4:3 aspect ratio or in widescreen, and includes bonus challenge modes such as Boss Rush and Curly Story. In essence, it has the same content as Cave Story+, which came out on Steam last year, but without the updated HD graphics and new soundtrack.
