The upcoming Plants vs. Zombies pinball table for Zen Pinball 2 and Pinball FX 2 is a product of such a close collaboration between developers Zen Studios and PopCap Games that it will incorporate original PvZ artwork and sound assets, according to an interview on the PlayStation blog.

The interview with Zen Studios' creative director Neil Sorens and PopCap's community director Jeff Green reveals that Zen Studios used the original 2D assets to translate PopCap's zombies into a 3D environment. The deliberate pace of PopCap's tower defense title didn't immediately translate into a fast-paced pinball experience, so Zen Studios began to incorporate core elements like the fog-bound "Going Nuts" mode into the table.

"When the Zen Studios team started sending us materials for approval, we were seriously impressed with how they were translating 2D to 3D," Green said. "It was like Plants vs. Zombies was completely new again, totally remade for a brand new experience."

The zombie-infested table will be available on September 4th in North America and the next day in Europe for Zen Pinball 2 on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, and for Pinball FX 2 on Xbox 360. You can watch the 3D zombies and sunflowers take over the table in the trailer below.
