Genshin Impact’s 3.1 update added new collectable materials: Scarab Beetles. These dung-rolling bugs are needed to ascend Cyno, so you’ll need to grab a bunch to level him up.
Our Genshin Impact Scarab Beetle location guide explains where to find these beetles quickly.
Update (Sept. 30): We’ve added some quick and easy Scarab beetle farming routes by Teleport Waypoints to this post.
Where to find Scarab beetles in Genshin Impact
Using the Genshin Impact Interactive Map (which we highly recommend you do, so you don’t lose track of any beetles you’ve already grabbed), you can see all the Scarab Beetles in the desert below.

However, many of the beetles are underground, so if you don’t see them on the surface, you’ll have to go under the sands to find them. In order to have access to the underground Sumeru desert, you’ll need to start the “Golden Slumber” world quest line. You can start this quest in Aaru Village at the following location:

Just like the other purple beetles from Inazuma, you’ll have to wait around 48 hours (in real time) for these beetles to respawn. If you need more to rush your Cyno to level 90, you’ll need to ask a friend nicely if you can take some from their world — or wait two days.
Genshin Impact Scarab beetle farming route
To grab beetles as quickly as possible, you’ll want to teleport to different Waypoints, grabbing as many as you can before you teleport to the next one. We’ve broken up some quick Scarab farming routes below based on if the routes are above or below ground.

Yet again, we recommend finishing the “Golden Slumber” quest line, as well as the quest after it, to increase your clearance and get full access to the underground areas of the Sumeru desert.

Our routes are more focused on grabbing Scarabs quickly near Teleport Waypoints, so you can use this to get some from your buddies (as long as you asked permission, of course).
