God of War guide: Lookout Tower collectibles

Exploring the Lake of Nine

Jeffrey Parkin (he/him) has been writing video game guides for Polygon for almost seven years. He has learned to love just about every genre of game that exists.

In God of War, once you’re free to explore all there is to offer on the Lake of Nine, you’ll likely head to the various towers and landmarks shrouded in the mist throughout the body of water. Each of these has items, enemies and more to explore. We’ll break down what you can find at one of these locations, Lookout Tower, located southwest of Tyr’s Temple. When you first emerge from the Witch’s Cave tunnel, this is the first dock to your right.

Lookout Tower

When you disembark from your canoe, you’ll see a Nornir chest right in front of you. You’ll have to deal with some Nightmares before you can solve its puzzle, though.

To the right of the boat dock, have the boy pick up the Hunter’s Kingdom treasure map. You can find this buried treasure next to the stronghold door in Veithurgard. (Check out our Hunter’s Kingdom treasure map guide for all of the details.)

Before you tackle the Nornir chest, there’s an artifact just to the right of it. Look above the Nornir chest for a spinning panel. Throw your axe and it’ll retract the spikes in the ground. Run over and grab the Abandon Ship artifact, then get out of the way before the spikes pop back up.

Nornir Chest

You open the Nornir chest in basically the same way as you just picked up that artifact, but with a couple extra steps.

  1. Throw your axe at the spinning panel above the chest.
  2. Turn a little left and hit the first bell.
  3. Swing back to the right past the spinning panel and hit the second bell.
  4. Continue swinging right to find the third and final bell at the top of the small waterfall.
  5. Retrieve your Idunn apple from the chest.

It’s tempting to pause after the first bell to hit the panel again and get yourself more time, but this will just waste the time that the first bell is ringing, and you’ll have to start over. There’s enough time to hit all three bells before the spikes come back up, it’ll just take a few tries. We recommend using R1 sidearm throws — they’re a little bit quicker than overhand throws.

While at the Lookout Tower beach, face the Lake and look above you. From the beach, hitting the raven takes a lot of skill (luck) and practice, but it’s possible. It’s much easier to get the raven from higher up, but you won’t be able to get there until later in the game.

Low Water phase

There’s not a ton to do or pick up at Lookout Tower during the low water phase, but it does give you a way to reach Muspelheim Tower (and a secret Realm Tear and reward).

During the low water phase, get back to the Lookout Tower beach and clear up the Nightmares waiting for you there.

On the right side of the beach — the west end — look for a crack you can climb. There are spikes sticking down from the top, though, so you can’t climb it yet. Look to the left for a spinning pillar. Hit it with your axe until the spikes disappear, then climb up.

At the top, follow the path to the right and jump the gap. There will probably be more spikes blocking your path. Turn around and hit the spinning pillar some more until they go away.

Climb up the next cliff as well. At the top, turn left to find a wooden chest and a chain that leads back down to the high water area of the Lookout Tower. To the right of the wooden chest is yet another cliff to climb.

Just keep climbing until you’re at the top where you’ll find a zip line. Ride it down, then deal with the Revenant and Nightmares waiting to meet you.

Directly ahead of you is a More than a Myth shrine. Just to the right of that, you’ll be able to find the Kneel Before Thor! buried treasure if you picked up the map in Landsuther Mines. (Check out our Kneel Before Thor! treasure guide for all of the details.)

Hop across the gap to the left of the shrine, then climb the wall. At the top, you’ll see a Legendary chest where you can pick up a Symbol of Heart enchantment.

Push open the doors, and you’ll find yourself on Muspelheim Tower. There’s a Mystic Gateway on your right and a very tough level six Traveler ahead of you.

Before you leave, make sure to use the elevator on your left to get it working — and give you a way up from the Lake.
