Don’t sell materials. Exchange them instead!

In Scarlet Nexus, you’ll find glowing white cubes — materials — tucked into different areas of each of the levels you navigate. It isn’t clear what these items do at first, but they are important to seek out while you play. These mysterious materials are the key to getting some rare items throughout the game.

Polygon’s Scarlet Nexus materials guide will help you understand what materials are used for. We’ll explain how to find them, why you shouldn’t sell them, and where you should use them.

What are materials?

In each area of Scarlet Nexus, you can run across glowing white cubes. They’re mostly off the main path, hidden down alleyways or in unassuming rooms.

These cubes are called materials. When you find them in different levels, they will be associated with that area. Enemies have a chance to drop materials, too. Their materials will be named after them.

As you begin collecting materials and they begin taking up space in your inventory, you won’t immediately know what they are used for. In fact, you can collect several of them in the opening hours of the game before they become useful.

Don’t sell materials

You may notice early that you can sell materials to Satori The Archivist. While each material fetches a good price, don’t do it.

Selling materials might be a good way to make money early in Scarlet Nexus, but regardless of what difficulty you’re playing at, there’s no real reason to amass cash within the game’s first few hours. You can’t buy stronger weapons, armor, or plug-ins at the start of the game, so money isn’t important until much later.

Save all your materials as they become invaluable once you get to the game’s second chapter.

Exchange materials for rare presents

At a certain point during the second chapter, Satori The Archivist gains a new option in his shop: Exchange. Once you’re able to exchange materials in his shop, you’ll notice you can get upgraded weapons, items, other gear, and most importantly presents.

Exchanging materials for presents is important because presents are one of the best ways to increase your bond level with other characters. Gifts are unique items you can give to other characters during the intermissions between each chapter. Exchanging materials with Satori is the only way to receive presents.

While you can exchange materials at Satori’s shop for items and gear in lieu of spending cash, you should always save materials for presents. Since you can’t buy gifts with cash, which is a more common resource, you should save materials for presents only.
