Bungie is bringing a dead hero back to life in Destiny 2’s upcoming Season of Dawn. The legendary Titan Saint-14 will rise again through some very complicated time travel. But with the return of one dead hero, plenty of players are hopeful another lost Guardian will return as well: the puckish rogue, Cayde-6.
Unfortunately, Bungie quashed those dreams almost instantly. In an interview with Bungie senior narrative designer Jonathan To and Season of Dawn design lead Tom Farnsworth, the developers told us why Cayde-6 isn’t coming back — at least not right now.
“The time travel you’re going to see in Season of Dawn is localized to Mercury. [...] Osiris failed on his mission to save Saint-14, first of all, and he was on a mission to save one Titan — no more, no less. He was only able to do it once.”
To referenced The Sundial lore entry from Bungie’s website, which tells the story of the Sundial’s creation. Osiris’ Sundial is what players will use to travel back in time during Season of Dawn and somehow rescue Saint-14. As To mentioned, the Sundial’s original purpose was to save Saint-14 — a rescue Osiris felt like he owed his good friend. We’re not sure how the Sundial will work yet, but we know it’s only usable on Saint-14.
When asked specifically if the Sundial could be used to bring someone like Cayde-6 back in the future, To said: “Nope. Cayde didn’t die on Mercury.”
The beloved Hunter Vanguard, Cayde-6, died during the Forsaken campaign in 2018. Players have long hoped and theorized he would return, but doesn’t seem like Cayde-6 will come back to life in Destiny 2. If he does, the Sundial won’t play any role in his resurrection or anyone else’s.
