You’re going to end up with a pile of consumables as you play through Mass Effect: Andromeda (especially if you haven’t figured out how to use them yet). You’ll loot them from corpses, find them in containers and even purchase them from vendors. The game, however, is surprisingly tight-lipped about how to actually use them, but we figured it out so you don’t have to.

You choose which consumables you carry with you during your loadout selection — either from a forward station, the screen right before you disembark the Tempest (or start a boss fight) or from the loadout station in the Tempest’s airlock.
To see them, you’ll have to navigate to the consumables tab .The number of slots you have available depends on how you’ve spent your AVP points. The types of consumables you have will range from temporary shield and life support boosts to special ammo to immediate reloads.

This is why it took us so long to figure out how to use consumables — we almost never use the weapons wheel. Holding down the reload button will swap between your primary weapons (and it takes quite a few skill points to even be able to carry a third). However, if you open the weapons wheel, your consumables will be arrayed around the bottom half of the circle.
