Jeffrey Parkin (he/him) has been writing video game guides for Polygon for almost seven years. He has learned to love just about every genre of game that exists.

Scattered around Monster Hunter Rise’s maps like Sandy Plains are collectible messages called relic records. Both messages and rampage messages look like notes tied to swords stuck in the ground. Approach them, and on-screen text says “old message.”

In this Monster Hunter Rise collectibles guide, we’ll show you the location of every Sandy Plains message and rampage message. Our numbered maps correspond to your in-game notebook, and our screenshots show all relic records locations.

When you collect all old messages in an area, Kagero the Merchant rewards you with decorations for your room. Find all Sandy Plains old messages, and you’ll get an Almudron carving and an Izuchi carving.

Sandy Plains message 1

On the west side of location 2, climb as high as you can up the cliffs at the edge of the map. Near the westernmost point, look for the downed tree (shown in the image above) along one of the ledges. Sandy Plains message 1 is a little farther west along that ledge.

Sandy Plains message 2

Look for the pond about halfway between locations 2 and 1. Stand in the pond (there’s a fishing spot here), and Turn west. There’s a small natural alcove with some climbable vines where you’ll find Sandy Plains message 2.

Sandy Plains message 3

Just northeast of location 1, look for a small fin of stone sticking out of the ground. Wirebug up to the ledge near the top to find Sandy Plains message 3.

Sandy Plains message 4

Head to the east side of location 11, and look for the huge, crossed trees — they’re shown on the map as interlocked C-shapes. Look for the sending sprigs nearby, and you’ll find Sandy Plains message 4 in the bushes.

Sandy Plains message 5

Get to location 8, and head to the northwest. Look for one of the stone bridges that leads to a natural alcove (and dead end). You’ll find Sandy Plains message 5 in that alcove.

Sandy Plains message 6

To the north of location 5 on the upper level of the map, look for the huge hole that leads down to the lower level. As you fall, look for a ledge on the side with a tree and a couple resource gathering points — it’s useful to hang from your wirebug (double tap the A button) so you can aim more carefully. Hop over to that ledge, and then look to the north. There’s a small half-circle tunnel on the wall just a little above the ledge. Wirebug over, and you’ll find Sandy Plains message 6 behind the column.

Sandy Plains message 7

About halfway between locations 2 and 7, climb up into the ruins — this is the location of sub-camp 1. Look for the tall ruins right above the sub-camp (or the future location of the sub-camp). Climb up to the first floor above the ground — not the top. You’ll find Sandy Plains message 7 on the east side of the floor.

Sandy Plains message 8

To the south of location 4, head to the southern edge of the rocky mesa (if you approach from the south, there’s a great wirebug that will get you close). Face east and look for a shallow cave below you — about halfway up the wall. You’ll find Sandy Plains message 8 in that cave.

Sandy Plains message 9

On the lower level of the map, head to the ruins near location 9. Head through the small doorway and into the T-shaped ruins on the east side. In the first room, take a right (south) into another sand-filled room. You’ll find Sandy Plains message 9 behind the bonepile there.

Sandy Plains message 10

Head up onto the mesa to the north of location 12 — there’s a super convenient great wirebug in the room to the north of Sandy Plains message 9. Look for the ruined wall. You’ll find Sandy Plains message 10 right next to a Desert Rose gathering spot.

Sandy Plains rampage message 7

From location 11 on the lower level of the map, head to the southwest. You’ll have to climb up onto a slightly higher level from the lowest path — look for a great wirebug to know you’re in the right spot. There’s a very narrow passage in the southwest corner of that flat area. Head through to find Sandy Plains rampage message 7 in the dead end area.

Sandy Plains rampage message 8

From the main base camp in Sandy Plains, head a little north. Once you’re out from under the rocky overhang, turn left and climb up onto the cliff above you. At the top, turn left again — facing south — and head all the way to the southernmost point to find Sandy Plains rampage message 8.
