Find and use the powerful ranged weapon

Jeffrey Parkin (he/him) has been writing video game guides for Polygon for almost seven years. He has learned to love just about every genre of game that exists.

There is only one option for ranged combat in Mortal Shell. And, like with so much of the game, it’s hard to find it. In this guide, we’ll tell you where to find the ballistazooka and how to use it.

Buy Tools from Vlas in Fallgrim Tower

Once you’ve reached Fallgrim Tower, you kind of already have access to the ballistazooka. It just doesn’t work yet. Head all the way up to the top of the tower, and visit Vlas (and make sure to pet the bodega cat while you’re there).

Buy the Tools for 8,000 Tar, and take them back down to the workbench. At the workbench, use the Tools to repair the ballistazooka, and you’ll start carrying it on your back.

Using the ballistazooka

Ammo for the ballistazooka is exceedingly rare as drops from enemies or loot, so you’ll need to use it sparingly. You can buy more Large Bolts from Vlas for 800 Tar (he has an infinite stock), but he’s the only merchant who sells them and that 800 a pop adds up fast.

The other thing about the ballistazooka is that it takes a very long time to equip (and put away) and even longer to reload. This is not a weapon you switch over to mid-battle. Instead, use it to start fights from a distance, and save it for especially tough enemies. The bolts deal a lot of damage, so they’re worth the price if it makes fights against hard-to-kill enemies shorter.

That said, it’s also really satisfying to take out an archer before they have a chance to ruin your day with their sniping.
