The genre Oscar alternative kicks off after a strange year

Last June, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences made the unprecedented decision to bump the annual Oscars ceremony from winter to April 2021, and shift the eligibility window to the end of February. The hope was that movies that faced delays over the COVID-19 pandemic might be able to wrap in time for release, and give the year a robust collection of contenders as if everything was normal. To compensate, many of the awards season mile markers, like the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, also moved to later dates.

Without January’s usual gluttony of dramas commanding the conversation, the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the group that organizes the Critics Choice Awards, decided to take advantage of the moment and honor films rarely represented at the Oscars. The Super Awards, which aired on Sunday night, was the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s (BFCA) first ever genre-movie awards show, a prestige alternative to the MTV Movie Awards honoring the best of the year in action, horror, science fiction, and superhero cinema (a category that also encompassed Video Game Movies because sure why not). There’s a fair argument that establishing an alternative awards show suggests that genre movies don’t belong in the normal Oscar conversation, despite everything from Lord of the Rings to District 9 and Black Panther proving otherwise. But since the traditional awards narrative basically excludes action, horror, and sci-fi more often than not, why not hire Kevin Smith and Dani Fernandez to spend two hours paying respects on The CW when nothing else is going on?

The best part of the inaugural Super Awards winners is that there are some genuine surprises, due to the fact that 2020 took its toll on the Hollywood release schedule, and that the BFCA continued to skew toward the mainstream instead of wading into grungier VOD offerings. This is not a group that is bowing at the altar of Scott Adkins and mainlining HiGH&LOW movies on Netflix. So Da 5 Bloods is the big winner in the action category. Is Da 5 Bloods even an action movie? There are at least two shootouts. Maybe that’s enough? An action connoisseur might roll their eyes.

Still, there are films and series among the winners that would never find love anywhere else, making the list a worthy conversation starter. Here are the winners of the 2020 Super Awards. A few may even wind up at the Oscars.
