The first trailer for Moxie, directed by Amy Poehler, taps into the underground DIY punk sensibilities of the Riot grrrl movement for today’s generation of teens.
Based on the YA novel of the same name by Jennifer Mathieu, Moxie follows Vivian Carter (Hadley Robinson), a shy high school student fed up with the sexist culture at her small town high school. Taking inspiration from her mother’s rebellious past, she and her friends start an anonymous zine calling out the toxic behavior of their peers. It’s all handmade zines, sharpie symbols on hands, and sticking it to the sexist status quo, set to a rocking Bikini Kill soundtrack.
Amy Poehler plays Ms. Carter, Vivian’s badass mom, with Lauren Tsai (Terrace House: Aloha), Josephine Langford (After), Patrick Schwarzenegger (yes, the son of Arnold Schwarzenegger), Sydney Park (The Walking Dead) and Clark Gregg (yes, Agent Coulson) in other roles.
Moxie hits Netflix on March 3.
