New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe guide: Acorn Plains Star Coins

Acorn Plains in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a map filled with rolling hills (literally, they roll you backward like a treadmill), moving rocks, and plenty of classic Mario enemies to stomp or avoid. Check the spot to the left of Toad’s House for a free Super Acorn to add to your items.

Acorn Plains 1 – Acorn Plains Way

Star Coin 1: This one is in plain sight, right after you get your first Super Acorn. A trail of coins will appear leading you to the first Star Coin.

Star Coin 2: As soon as you come back to earth after grabbing that first Star Coin, you’ll see a pipe. Travel down it to find a room filled with coins, including the Star Coin.

Star Coin 3: After the red coin challenge, you’ll come to a tall platform and see a trail of coins reaching out of the sky just beyond it. Jump up to the platform and use a glide to follow the coins. At the right moment, hit R to boost yourself onto a platform. There’s a pipe here that leads you to a bonus area with many coins and your final Star Coin.

Acorn Plains 2 – Tilted Tunnel

Star Coin 1: This one is right on your path. When you slide down a long slope full of Goombas and coins, there’s a jump at the end that will take you sailing right through the Star Coin.

Star Coin 2: A little bit after the checkpoint, you’ll encounter a red Koopa Troopa — don’t hit it with a fireball! Knock it out, and send the shell to the right side of the screen. It’ll hit a brick near the bottom, which will grow into a vine. Climb up the vine, and you’ll see a pipe. Jump in the pipe, and it will turn into a cannon and shoot you directly through a bunch of coins and the Star Coin.

Star Coin 3: Just after you finish the red coin challenge, you’ll see a pipe blocked off by a crystal — but there’s also a sign with a down arrow. Ground pound the floor next to the sign to move the crystals, access the pipe, and collect the final Star Coin of the level.

Acorn Plains Tower – Crushing Cogs Tower

Star Coin 1: After you climb the first cog and jump onto the ledge above it, look up to see the first Star Coin in a shaft above you — it’ll be alternately hidden and revealed with a rising stone block. When it’s visible, wall jump up the shaft to reach it.

Star Coin 2: The second Star Coin is below and to the left of the small cog that holds this level’s red coin challenge. You can reach it with a spin jump off the cog or using a hidden coin brick to get across. (It’s at the center of the spinning wheel of coins.)

Star Coin 3: After the spot where you have to squeeze between three fast-moving cogs, jump up and to the right to find a small ledge. From there, jump up and right again, and you’ll find yourself in a hidden tunnel that leads to the final Star Coin. It’s above you, but when you jump down you’ll find a pipe that will shoot you up to get it — and bypass some cogs.

Acorn Plains 3 – Yoshi Hill

Star Coin 1: You’ll see the first Star Coin right after you hit the first coin block that contains Yoshi’s egg. It’s too high for you to reach it alone, so use Yoshi’s flutter jump to snag it.

Star Coin 2: You’ll see what looks like two bricks embedded in the ground. Ground pound them to break through to a hidden tunnel that leads to a pipe. Take the pipe to a secret room where you’ll see the Star Coin hovering over a bunch of Piranha Plants — hopefully you’ve still got Yoshi to flutter over them.

Star Coin 3: After the checkpoint, you’ll come to a series of ledges where one, then two, then three Monty Moles attack you. Jump down the gap to the right of the tallest ledge — it looks like certain death, but it’s actually a pipe. Once again, you’ll need Yoshi’s flutter jump to reach the Star Coin, so hopefully the Monty Moles didn’t scare him off.

Acorn Plains 4 – Mushroom Heights

Star Coin 1: Collect the Balloon Baby Yoshi you’ll find on the map before this level because you’ll need it for this Star Coin. You’ll see a line of coins leading up to a high blue platform — inflate Balloon Baby Yoshi and fly up to collect the Star Coin.

Star Coin 2: You’ll need the Balloon Baby Yoshi for this Star Coin as well. You’ll see it after the checkpoint, by another blue platform — but this time it’s hanging underneath. Fly low and claim it.

Star Coin 3: The final Star Coin is nestled below a series of swinging platforms, guarded by two Giant Piranha Plants. You’ll need a fire flower to slay the plants, and Balloon Baby Yoshi, while not essential, will make collecting the Star Coin a snap.

Acorn Plains 5 – Rise of the Piranha Plants

Star Coin 1: The first Star Coin is near the beginning of the level, hanging above a Giant Piranha Plant. Wait until the platform holding the plant descends enough so you can jump over it and claim your Star Coin.

Star Coin 2: Fireballs are essential for this Star Coin. You’ll see a Giant Piranha Plant hanging upside-down guarding a pipe. Kill it and enter the pipe — it will take you to a secret room where three more Giant Piranha Plants guard the Star Coin. Slay them all and collect your prize.

Star Coin 3: The final Star Coin of the level is easily visible, hanging above a Hammer Bro. near the end of the level.

Acorn Plains Castle – Lemmy’s Swingback Castle

Star Coin 1: You’ll see the first Star Coin between two swinging platforms near the beginning of the level. Use a running leap or your Super Acorn glide to reach it.

Star Coin 2: Right after the checkpoint, you’ll see this Star Coin below some platforms. You’ll need a Super Acorn — use your glide to snag it.

Star Coin 3: After the red coin challenge, you’ll step onto a long series of swinging platforms with plenty of Podobos to avoid. Keep your eyes peeled for a pipe sticking out from the lava. Take it to a secret room with the final Star Coin hovering above the lava — unless you’re a truly talented platformer, you’ll need your Super Acorn glide to capture it.

Acorn Plains A – Blooper’s Secret Lair

Star Coin 1: This Star Coin is pretty easy to see — it’s at the top of the screen, between two green pipes blowing bubbles downward. Wait for the yellow pipe below them to blow bubbles upward, then swim up to claim your prize.

Star Coin 2: This Star Coin is also easy to see, but harder to collect. It’s under a ledge and seemingly blocked off. Swim under the red pipe to the left of the coin (you’ll go off the screen) to snag it.

Star Coin 3: After you take a pipe to the second stage of the level, keep your eyes on the left side of the screen. As you work your way up, you’ll eventually see three coins outside the entrance of a pipe. Take that pipe to find your final Star Coin.
