In this Nier Replicant remake guide, we’ll explain how fishing works, and then walk you through “The Fisherman’s Gambit” side quests. We’ve got the first five parts below, and we’ll add the remaining five soon.
How to fish
Your first experience with fishing in the Nier Replicant remake will be when you reach Seafront in search of a shaman fish.
Fishing in Nier Replicant is pretty straightforward. You show up, you cast, you wait, and you reel in your fish. You don’t control how far (or even where) you cast, and fish show up automatically when you have bait in the water.
There are three things you control, though: location, bait, and reeling.
- Fishing is only possible from certain locations — places where you can walk into the water. More importantly, some fish are only available in certain regions. We’ll point out the specific locations for each step of “The Fisherman’s Gambit” below.
- Bait determines what type(s) of fish you’ll catch. In the walkthroughs below, we’ll mention the bait you need for each type of fish you’re after.
- Reeling in your catch involves setting the hook, and then pulling back on the left thumbstick until you’ve claimed your fish. Let’s go into more detail on that.
When you cast, watch your bobber. It will go underwater once, letting you know a fish is nearby. Either on the second or third bob(?), you’ll hear a plop. Set the hook by hitting the cast button again. If you attempt to hook into a fish that is too strong for you, you’ll immediately lose it. For those stronger fish, completing more parts of “The Fisherman’s Gambit” increases your fishing skill, making you strong enough to catch them.
Once you’ve hooked, a fish a blue bar appears on the bottom of your screen. This is like a fight or a reeling meter. Wear the blue bar down to nothing to catch your fish.
You do this by pulling back on the left thumbstick. As the fish moves left and right, move the thumbstick in the opposite direction. Picture a circle centered on the protagonist like in the image above.
The controller also rumbles when you’re in the right spot. Adjust the stick slightly until the vibration is strongest, and then wait. Keep matching the fish’s movements until you’ve caught it or it gets away.
How fast you reel (how fast the blue bar goes down) depends on your fishing skill.
The Fisherman’s Gambit quests
There are 10 quests in “The Fisherman’s Gambit” series. The first five are available in the first half of the game, and the remainder are only available after the halfway point.
The Fisherman’s Gambit
In Seafront, after you’ve caught the shaman fish and returned, speak to the resident by the waterfront. He’ll teach you more about fishing.
Different fish are caught on different baits. For the 10 sardines he requires, you’ll need lugworms. The Tackle Shop in Seafront sells them for 10 gold each. Make sure you buy extra (we went through about 20) to account for lost fish, catching the wrong fish, or the junk you’ll inevitably catch.
Head for the beach just west of the fisherman — at the south end of Seafront’s shopping district — for sardines. Don’t sell any of the other kinds of fish you catch, though. You’ll probably need them in the subsequent parts of “The Fisherman’s Gambit.”
Return to the resident with your 10 sardines and he’ll reward you by improving your fishing skill.
The Fisherman’s Gambit, Part 2
Once you’ve completed “The Fisherman’s Gambit,” speak to the fisherman again.
This time, he’ll ask for 10 blowfish. You’ll need lugworms for bait again, so buy plenty extra. You’ll catch blowfish from the same beach you caught the sardines — just to the west of the fisherman.
Bring him the 10 blowfish, and he’ll again increase your fishing skill.
The Fisherman’s Gambit, Part 3
After “The Fisherman’s Gambit, Part 2,” return to the fisherman in Seafront again. This time, he needs 7 rainbow trout.
Head to the Northern Plains and down by the water near the base of the bridge leading to Junk Pile. Use your lure for these. Buy a couple extra just in case, but the lure is reusable, so you won’t be going through them the same way you did lugworms.
Return the fish to Seafront, and you’ll once again improve your fishing skill.
The Fisherman’s Gambit, Part 4
After “The Fisherman’s Gambit, Part 3,” return to the fisherman in Seafront again. This time, he needs 5 bream.
You need lugworms or a lure. You might catch bream from the same beach you caught the sardines and blowfish — just west of the fisherman — but you’ll also catch a lot of sardines and blowfish, too. We had more luck fishing with a lure from the stone pier standing directly next to the fisherman.
Hand over the fish, and you’ll once again improve your fishing skill.
The Fisherman’s Gambit, Part 5
After “The Fisherman’s Gambit, Part 4,” return to the fisherman in Seafront again. This time, he needs 5 black bass.
Head to the Village. Right in the middle of the map — directly west of your house and the save point — head down by the water. Use a lure as bait.
Return to Seafront with, and you’ll once again improve your fishing skill. This is the last Fisherman’s Gambit quest before the second half of the Nier Replicant remake.
