The latest title to take inspiration from the battle royale is not what we would have ever expected — it’s better.
Tetris 99 is available today as a free download exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, Nintendo revealed during today’s Direct presentation stream. It’s a competitive, online multiplayer version of classic Tetris gameplay, where 99 contestants vie to be the last player standing in the fierce puzzle game.
Players can attack one another with “garbage” — i.e., tetrominoes — to thwart one another’s clearance strategies and fill up their screen.
The Tetris franchise has had quite a resurgence lately with the release of last year’s Tetris Effect, a VR-compatible take on classic Tetris from Lumines and Rez creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi that wound up being one of our favorite games of the year.
Of all the new battle royale games to come out lately, this might be one of the most inspired.
