The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s sequel is in development, but not for the Nintendo 64. YouTuber The Regressor rectifies that with this exquisite demake video, which imagines an E3 1999 Nintendo Direct making the announcement.
It’s a low-resolution, virtuoso adaptation (h/t Eurogamer) of the actual E3 2019 Nintendo Direct trailer revealing that BOTW2 is in the works. The Regressor says apparent visual errors or defects are “100 percent intentional and either left in or put in on purpose,” sort of like listening to vinyl records for the crackle and hiss.
However, “my goal was not to replicate Ocarina or Majora’s Mask visuals exactly, or be 100 percent technically accurate to N64/Disk Drive capabilities or specifications.” So if you popped in to #wellactually something, slow your roll.
For everyone who can appreciate fine art, though, it’s fun to see a new game swaddled in the comforting low poly count and washed colors of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask on a CRT.
Breath of the Wild 2, or whatever it will be called if not that, is in development for Nintendo Switch but does not have a launch date or window yet.
