Resident Evil 5 is the top-selling game in Capcom's history, according to the company's recently updated investor relations data.
The game now surpasses Street Fighter 2 as the most popular game in Capcom's roster, selling roughly 6.5 million units since its launch in 2009. Capcom lists 61 games that have sold over 1 million units since their release across often numerous platforms.
"In the home video game market, sales of more than one million units is the generally accepted standard for a major hit," reads a statement from the company. "Since Capcom's inception, we have created many of these titles, including Street Fighter and Resident Evil. With more than 60 titles that have sold more than one million units, Capcom stands alone in the video game industry."

That certainly explain RE6 then, why they went the more action focused route.
I really enjoyed 6, though that doesn’t seem to be a common opinion.
I do want a return to more horror, and slower pace though.
I want zombies back.
I can enjoyed both types of games though.

I really enjoyed 6. I missed the gun upgrades from 5 definitely but the counters, dodge rolls, shooting from the ground while back-stepping, and that fantastic auto-aim shot made the game really fun to play and watch.
I have stories from RE6 that if I feel those moments will never happen again in any game due to it’s reception. I get melancholic every time it is brought up.

I was having fun in RE6, but I felt like I was missing out because some unique Multipayer features were not being hit up as much as they could have been. (Probably a low consistent player population)
Possible ‘invasions’ by other players as zombies during Campaign? Fah-reaking awesome, love that idea – and it’s used to great effect in Dark Souls.
In fact, I would have loved it if this game was even more like Dark Souls (I love that game so much) but counting bullets every minute was definitely pretty stressful, so I don’t know how they would pull it off in the projectile weapon age…
I really hope this doesn’t mean they are canning all the unique and interesting Multiplayer elements, that would make me incredibly sad. Much more of this type of adventurous MP interaction needs to happen with the AAA budget titles that are being released.

i enjoyed 6 as well but i also understand that it didn’t fulfill people’s expectations i guess, people expected less action and more… suspense i guess… but damn 6’s mercenary mode… WHODOGGIE! LUV IT!

Resident Evil 5 hit at a pretty good time, and delivered an appealing product. The action heavy, 3rd Person Shooter was pushing strong.

Push?
PUSH?
PUSH IT REAL GOOD!

Resident Evil 5 is probably not Capcom’s best game, by a long shot, but it’s still a very good game.
By ak-blanc on 10.31.13 4:44am
Worst Resident Evil, best selling Capcom game. I’m happy they’re apparently going back to the survival horror roots with RE7, but i’m not going to get my hopes up. Until then The Evil Within.
By REVOLVERocelot on 10.31.13 4:49am
The issue is that Resident Evil 4.5 is what sold well, not RE5.
RE4 was great and probably the high point of the series despite missing the mark on a few points that were standard elements of the series; when RE5 shipped everyone who bought it was expecting RE4 with RE5’s visuals, not a wannabe COD hall shooter.
By FakeAssName on 10.31.13 6:50pm
Very true and it seems RE fans like myself keep doing this, we don’t want to believe it’ll become lost planet or megaman. RE6 Leon campaign was alright, but no where as good as the originals.
By REVOLVERocelot on 10.31.13 10:51pm
Disappointed that Revelaitons on 3DS didn’t crack the top 60, while the HD version sits at 61 with just 1 million units shipped across five major platforms.
It isn’t classic Resident Evil, but it’s the closest we’ve come since Resident Evil 4. Was there something wrong with the HD version? The PC demo seemed decent enough for what was originally a 3DS game.
By paradox me on 10.31.13 4:55am
This. Revelations was the most fun I’ve had with an RE game since 4.
By drewtoo26 on 10.31.13 10:06am
Most people looked at me weird when I was excited for RE:Rev after RE5. Most look at me weird for getting it for $20 on the Wii U after RE6. I don’t know why. It’s pretty nice and a good RE game.
By Elvenmonk on 10.31.13 3:02pm
The fact that RE5 is Capcom’s highest selling game, doesn’t surprise me. Its high sales are probably due to the great critical reception that RE4 received. Most critics and fans view RE5 as one of their least favorite games in the series, and RE4 as one of their favorite games.
This phenomenon happened with the Final Fantasy series. FF12 is the highest selling FF game, despite the fact that it wasn’t as well received by fans as FF6, FF7 and FF10. Personally, I felt confident about buying the collector’s edition of FF12 because I very much enjoyed FF10.
Enjoying a prior game in the series is a big factor in helping the next game to achieve high sales. I predict that RE7 will sell less than RE6 because of the poor reception that RE6 has received among english-speaking critics and fans. Personally, I enjoyed RE6.
By Solaire on 10.31.13 5:37am
Same thing happened with the subpar Megaman X5. It sold like hot cakes because of the reception from the stellar Megaman X4, so they made X6 more like X5 because it sold better.
Ugh, Capcom is so short sighted….
By Zones on 10.31.13 2:52pm
Didn’t know that. Yeah, it’s short-sighted. Developers really should read critic and fan reviews.
When it comes to RE, I think that Capcom’s problem with RE6 was that Japanese fans (including the developers themselves) liked RE6’s Hollywood-esque story and set pieces, whereas english-speaking fans disliked it and wanted it to be a pure survival horror game. I think there’s a difference between what the local Japanese market wants and what the rest of the world wants.

Resident Evil 5 marked the point where I left the franchise behind. RE4 was enjoyable, but a bit of a departure from the traditional experience. RE5 also came out around a time where there was a massive shift in the way gaming was perceived as a popular form of entertainment. When RE5 was released there were far more people who played games than their were when the originals were released.
While I appreciate the intention to move into zombie-action territory, I still think that they’ve never quite been able to top Resident Evil 2 or the outstanding remake of the original on the Nintendo GameCube.
By 1.21GigaWatts on 10.31.13 6:00am
Yea, that remake of the original was dope. But you should give Revelations a spin, it’s pretty great.
By Doctor Feelgood on 10.31.13 9:15am
A few people have said that to me now! I think i’ll check it out this weekend, thanks for the recommendation :)
By 1.21GigaWatts on 11.01.13 7:10am
RE5: Sooooo good.
By agemyth on 10.31.13 7:17am
Street Fighter 2 was released in… which year?
By Mathead on 10.31.13 7:53am
1991. Considering how much gaming has grown in the past 20 years, it’s pretty mind-blowing that it reigned for so long. For a game to sell that well over 20 years ago is a real testament to what a phenomenon SF2 really was.
By laser beams on 10.31.13 2:08pm
Riiiight.
I’m so sick of the logic that’s inevitably attached to it.
Best selling = best game. Gotta copy that formula.
Review scores/numbers being way too strong an influence aside.
Why is it so hard to understand the logic that success is predicated upon how good PREVIOUS title(s) were.
People who caught the other ones used/cheap/borrowed/rented may now end up pre-ordering the new one on blind faith.
I’d say that just shows all the RE’s before 5 gathered tons of fans (through various times in their release and various means, such as people borrowing or playing with friends) and RE6 shows a decline in sales because many people who were said fans of the series were disappointed and the gamer who randomly picked up 5 didn’t like it or has no vested interest in the series to pick up 6.
I’m sure FFXIII also “sold well” and XV will be a huge disappointment because noone is gonna wanna waste their time with it after having wasted it on XIII.
I guess it takes a rich, blind moron to miss that… but I guess if I was one, I’d be a rich exec somewhere, too.
I think this industry just isn’t meant to be nearly as profitable as most people try to exploit it for… thanks to rare super-successful phenoms like WoW and CoD.
By Transatlantic.Faux on 10.31.13 9:14am
Well they’re in business to make money. Chasing the formula that worked well enough to sell 6.5 million units…not exactly bad business sense.
By Sinisthetic on 10.31.13 12:13pm
I really liked Resident Evil 5. I think I like it even more than RE 4, and definitely more than 6. REmake is still the best though.
