Blizzard’s radically changing Overwatch’s Mercy

Overwatch healer Mercy is getting a massive overhaul, game director Jeff Kaplan revealed today in a developer update video. The most radical change — “and it’s going to seem a little bit shocking at first,” Kaplan said — is that Mercy’s ultimate ability will no longer be Resurrect.

Instead, Resurrect will now be a secondary common ability for Mercy, Kaplan said, explaining that she’ll no longer have the ability to resurrect multiple teammates at once as part of her revision. Resurrect is now single target only ability, Kaplan said, and will be on a “rather long cooldown” so you won’t see Mercy players constantly reviving their teammates.

Mercy’s new ultimate ability is called Valkyrie, and when she uses it she’ll have the ability to fly. Like, really fly, Kaplan said.

“She can fly, and I don’t mean that she can Pharah-boost in the air briefly, I mean she can fly,” he said. “And it’s super fun. You have complete control of your character. After all, Mercy has those wings we might as well put them to real use. I mean, Guardian Angel’s pretty good, but imagine flying with Mercy, how much fun it could be.”

Valkyrie will also boost Mercy’s other abilities, giving her a shorter Resurrection cooldown and making her more powerful in “Battle Mercy” mode. Her attack weapon will fire faster and do more damage when Valkyrie is in effect, making her much deadlier in combat situations. Guardian Angel will go much further with Valkyrie active, giving Mercy better mobility. And her healing and damage boost beams will similarly extend further and target multiple teammates at once.

Here are the changes to Mercy as specified in the game’s latest patch notes:

Valkyrie (New Ultimate Ability)

Valkyrie unleashes the full power of Mercy’s Valkyrie Suit, enhancing her weapons and abilities for 20 seconds:

Those proposed Mercy changes will be going onto Overwatch’s public test region (PTR) servers. Kaplan said the team will be experimenting with different versions of Resurrect and how it works with Valkyrie, so don’t consider any of these changes set in stone just yet.

Good scream I hope?

I guess they’re trying to eliminate last second turn-arounds thanks to a well timed res?

Yeah, that is a bummer.

Only for Mercy players, because its frustrating as f*** for the rest of the Overwatch population.

Some of the most exciting moments revolve around that, though! And not just for Mercy’s team – a friend of mine exploded a DVa mech on top of a freshly rezzed team. It was amazing. And "Heroes Never Die" is so iconic…… This is hard to process. And I haven’t even played since Chinese New Year.

all changes that raise the skill ceiling are good imo
i have been complaining that mercys team rez was bad and ruined the flow of the game and had too much impact for someone just pressing q and finally… jeff gives me validation after all these months.
mercy was just too easy a hero, you could climb the ladder so fast only playing her, which sucked for your teammates a lot because their would be the inevitable game where mercy just wasnt an option and because mercy doesnt require as much mechanical skill or game sense the mercy mains would be screwed and just end up losing the game for their team because they would underperform (compared to their relative rank) when playing other heroes.

now jeff… its time to give mccree a 7th bullet… you coward

Since I main Mercy, I was really nervous opening this article. But these updates all sound really, incredibly fun. Quite excited to go super saiyan on an enemy team!

As a Mercy main, I was bouncing in my chair at these changes. I’m also not a fan of being expected to hide when I have Rez and wait for the team to die. These changes will make her playstyle more active. Flying!

When I played Mercy, never were the more than two people dead while I was alive. I never got the big rez, ever.
With these changes, my playstyle will get a massive boost. It’s right up my alley.

I don’t think I could’ve ever anticipated a bigger meta-shift. Not only does this mean that Mercy is a more tactical hero, selectively reviving key heroes like tanks on defense, other healers or DPS on offense or heroes that died right before they could ult, this means that a team can no longer be punished for a successful team-wipe by a hiding Mercy pressing Q. It ALSO means that you have to be aware of who Mercy is reviving, and you have to be on your toes to make sure that ulting Genji you just killed wasn’t inta-revived.

The new Valkyrie ult makes Mercy a huge addition to team play both on defense AND offense, rather than her ult being primarily a team-wipe reversal.

I normally main Zenyatta because of his high damage output and selective weakening of targets with Discord, but this puts Mercy in a completely different support position that sounds incredibly fun.

What he said.

So how does this work for the trophy that requires you to resurrect 4 players at once? Are they changing it or are you out of luck if you haven’t gotten this trophy yet?

I’m anticipating some nerfs in Mercy’s future after the change but these changes are very welcome.

Blizzard is already talking about nerfing Mercy’s new ult because they feel it has too much offensive power. So, expect at least some rollback of gun damage on it. Also, I really doubt it’ll stay at 20 seconds, but we’ll see.

This is good but it’ll still get a bunch of people mad about it.

That kind of goes without saying.

Well, there we have it folks, the last true support character. R.I.P lol

The only healer with higher healing per second is an Ana with almost 80% accuracy. How is she dead?

No more Mercy for me ever again then.

My 2nd most played character across all mode. Loved playing support in comp. Felt good to help out my team.

Oh well, I’ll just go back to Junkrat in comp then.

You could just try it first

Seriously? Rez was cheap. This sounds like the character will be way more fun. I mean you can FLY!!!!! Come on!!!!

Come out from hiding once in a while, it doesn’t hurt… much.
